▷ National Institute of Environmental Research provides information on the entire waste battery process and responds to international standardization
The National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER, President Kum Hanseung) under the Ministry of Environment announced that it will publish the ‘Technical Data Book on Waste Batteries from Electric Vehicles’ on June 9 to effectively respond to the ongoing discussions on international standards by the International Organization for Standardization Technical Committee on Waste Management (ISO/TC297) and to utilize it as a professional resource for policy and industry.
This data book covers domestic and international battery management policies, industry and technology trends, and developments in international standardization related to waste batteries. In particular, it is characterized by its comprehensive organization of information on the entire process of collecting, storing, and transporting waste batteries from electric vehicles.
It also includes information on battery regulations and market trends in major battery-producing countries such as Korea, the United States, the European Union (EU), and China, as well as the structure of the secondary battery industry, the import and export status of black mass, and details on the supply chain of critical materials.
This data book is expected to be highly useful not only for policy development and responding to ISO in the public sector but also as a practical resource for the industrial field. In addition, it is anticipated to serve as foundational material for the NIER to take a leading role in ISO discussions related to waste batteries.
Since the end of last year (2024), the NIER has been carrying out response efforts to reflect Korea’s waste policy direction and related industry opinions in the international standardization process concerning the collection and transportation of waste batteries from electric vehicles, which has been under international discussion. It plans to continuously strengthen its response capabilities going forward.
The full version of this data book can be downloaded and viewed in PDF format from the NIER Environmental Information Library website (ecolibrary.me.go.kr/nier).
Jeon Tae-wan, Director General of the Environmental Resources Research Department, who oversaw the publication of the technical data book, stated, “Since international standards related to waste batteries can have a direct impact on domestic management policies and the industry, we hope this data book will serve as a practical foundation for response.”
Lee Jong-cheon, Director General of the Climate Change and Carbon Research Department, who oversees international standards in the environmental field, stated, “We will provide our fullest support to ensure that Korea’s waste battery management policies and industry perspectives are actively reflected in international standards.”
