MOE Begins to Expand the Green Life Campaign

◇ The Ministry of Environment will actively promote the green life campaign including nurturing 50,000 green leaders by 2015.

 ● Expanding distribution of Tips on Green Life, green life guiding principle for each social class

 ● Conducting Cool Style Campaign, Carbon Point System, and raising the ratio of eco-friendly agricultural products

 ● Introducing Green Store Certification System in 2011 and attaching carbon label to 500 products in 2012

The Ministry of Environment announced the launch of nationwide low carbon green life campaign at the 5th meeting of Presidential Committee on Green Growth on August 24, 2009, one year later since the declaration of national low carbon green growth vision.

The low carbon green life campaign includes;

Distributing ‘Tips on Green Life’ into the whole nation, and promoting green life experience program with the participation of citizens in each region.

* Tips on Green Life: tips on how to practice green life for each social group and lifestyle. They consist of 80 principles for 10 groups including household, workplace, school and army.

* Green life experience program: climate change week in April, greenhouse gas measurement week, and green vacation.

In an attempt to encourage green life and green consumption, the Ministry has distributed low carbon green life principles and promotes green food campaign since September, 2009. In particular, it plans to significantly increase the ratio of environmentally-friendly agricultural products from 5% in 2009 to 9% in 2012.

In addition, Cool Style Campaign no-jacket and no-necktie campaign aimed at preventing global warming -- will be promoted for workers. Also, diverse green transportation campaigns including 10 tips for environmentally-friendly driving will be conducted. Commuting in bicycle is encouraged and Pedestrian Day will be designated from 2010.

Moreover, good practices will be shared through enhanced incentives for green life.

Carbon label will be attached to 500 products by 2012, which shows how much carbon emits through the life cycle of the product. Carbon label system encourages green production and management by opening up the information on carbon emission. Green Store Certification System will be introduced in 2011.

The ministry plans to collect and share good practice by each social group and promote good green life through diverse awards at several events National Green Start Conference in November, and ‘Green Korea 2010’ next year.

By 2015, the ministry will also nurture 50,000 green leaders, those who practiced green life exemplarily, and use the website of Green Start as a communication center for green life. Green Start network will play a role of an executive organization of green life.

With the cooperation by the Presidential Committee on Green Growth and other relevant authorities, the ministry plans to make more concrete measures to expand low carbon green life campaign so as to realize green growth without delay.
