On November 21, the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER, President Kum Hanseung) under the Ministry of Environment signed a business agreement with Weathernews Inc. at its headquarters in Seo-gu, Incheon. This business agreement aims to establish a cooperative relationship in the field of atmospheric environment, among others. The two organizations will also promote the first private use of stationary orbit environmental satellite videos and information. 

The NIER will provide real-time environmental satellite videos and data, while Weathernews plans to utilize them for corporate consulting such as air pollution prediction. In addition, Weathernews plans to broadcast environmental satellite observation videos through its 13 branch offices in various Asian countries. It has also agreed to collaborate in fostering the development of environmental satellite content industry. 

The geostationary environmental satellite launched by South Korea in 2020 is the first of its kind in the world. It generates a total of 30 types of video data, including 21 types of basic environmental satellite outputs and 9 types of utilization outputs. These data are being publicly disclosed in real-time on the Environmental Satellite Center website (nesc.nier.go.kr). 

Yoo Myeong-su, Director of Climate and Air Quality Research Department at the NIER, stated, “This business agreement will serve as an opportunity to promote widespread awareness of environmental satellite data among domestic and international users and greatly expand the utilization of satellite data.” He added, “We will do our utmost to actively utilize environmental satellite data for monitoring atmospheric environmental and climate change in Asia in the future.”
