Exploring Measures to Foster the Battery Circular Use Industry

▷ Industry, academia, and research experts gather to promote the circular use of end-of-life batteries, including the introduction of a recycled material production certification system

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment (MCEE, Minister Kim Sungwhan) announced that it will hold the “Battery Circular Use Policy Discussion Forum” on December 16 at the Korea Battery Circulation Cluster in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

This forum was organized to share the current status of key policy initiatives to promote the circular use of end-of-life batteries and to explore measures to foster the industry.

Around 100 experts are expected to attend, including representatives from electric vehicle and battery manufacturers, recycling and reuse companies, relevant associations and organizations, research institutions, and local governments.

In Session 1, presentations will be given on: the current status of building a demand-tailored corporate support platform at the Korea Battery Circulation Cluster; the direction of the battery recycled material production certification system; and the current status of establishing an integrated environmental information center covering the entire life cycle of electric vehicles. In addition, a tour of the Resource Circulation Research Center facilities within the cluster will introduce battery performance and diagnostic equipment, recycling demonstration facilities*, and related infrastructure.

* 17 types of testing and analysis equipment, 16 types of performance and diagnostic equipment, four temperature- and humidity-controlled explosion-proof chambers, and 13 types of recycling equipment

In Session 2, presentations and a comprehensive discussion will be held on: the results of a study evaluating the recycling value of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries; the current status of research and development (R&D) initiatives in the circular use of end-of-life batteries; plans to expand the functions of future waste resources base collection centers to strengthen industry support; and the current status of establishing a battery inline automated performance evaluation center.

The MCEE formulated the “Measures to Promote Battery Circular Use” last May, and at this forum, it plans to share the progress of key tasks to date with stakeholders from industry, academia, and research institutions, and to reflect in-depth discussions in future policy and institutional improvements.

Kim Go-eung, Director General for the Resources Circulation Bureau at the MCEE, stated, “In the era of carbon neutrality, the stable circular use of end-of-life batteries, which are key resources in the circular economy, is directly linked to national competitiveness.” He added, “We will provide maximum support to ensure that Korean companies can secure international competitiveness and grow by strengthening cooperation among industry, academia, and research institutions centered on the Korea Battery Circulation Cluster.”
